The mixed-used development is key to delivering enhanced and revitalised activation spaces for the Jewish Arts Quarter, a shared vision of Glen Eira City Council and the Jewish Arts Quarter.

Jewish Arts Quarter

Located in the heart of the Elsternwick Cultural Precinct, the Jewish Arts Quarter (JAQ) will deliver a new multi-use cultural centre and world class destination that will celebrate Jewish life and culture in Melbourne – bringing together museums, theatres, shops, restaurants, cafes, education facilities and new public spaces.

JAQ will also become a new revitalised home for the Jewish Museum of Australia: Gandel Centre of Judaica and Kadimah Jewish Cultural Centre & National Library – supporting their missions to illuminate Jewish Life and provide education, performance and social programs.

This vision is supported at local, state and federal levels of government.

Creating community spaces

Community is at the heart of the Jewish Arts Quarter. Events, performances and plaza activity seek to bring Selwyn Street to life. On the western side of Selwyn Street, the Jewish Arts Quarter (at 7 Selwyn Street) seeks to increase Melbourne’s multi cultural value by providing a new community home for concerts, festivals and food that will complement the exhibitions and programs.

On the eastern side, a Cultural Precinct of stallholders and eateries, the Kadimah Cultural Centre and our new supermarket would create an active food and retail destination for the community. One of the first steps to preparing for the Cultural Precinct is the relocation of the Kadimah Cultural Centre into 10 Selwyn Street. This relocation can then be the catalyst for the Jewish Museum to have a new home in Selwyn Street together with 4C Community Co-Lab, realising the full potential of a shared community vision. This relocation is supported by $5 million in State Government funding to date.

Woolworths has entered into a commercial arrangement with the Jewish Arts Quarter (JAQ) to provide almost 1,000 sqm of space at 10 Selwyn Street for a Place of Assembly, mezzanine and kiosk. This space will be available for the community to use as well as supporting Council’s Cultural Precinct vision.
